This will provide you with a list of the families who had a particular surname and were included in a city directory in the year that you specify. City directories are similar to telephone directories, although they came into existence before the telephone. They generally list the names and addresses of the families who lived in a city, and sometimes gave more information about the family, such as the occupations of the adults.

City directories are also helpful for locating families in non-census years. Knowing the location of a family can help you find other records relating to them, such as birth and death records. It may also help you find the family in a state census or in unindexed federal census records.
